Scammers pretend your computer is infected, show fake errors or pop-ups, and convince you to give them remote access or pay for bogus fixes.
Yes. Voice-cloned scams frequently imitate family members asking for help with fake emergencies. A safe word system can help prevent this.
These callers often spoof official numbers, threaten arrest or fines, and demand immediate payment. Real agencies never call demanding immediate payment via gift card or payment app.
People frequently encounter phishing, identity theft, tech support scams, investment and payment fraud, charity or emergency scams, and online shopping or overpayment scams. See our Common Scams & Fraud resource for more.
Look for red flags like unexpected requests, urgent threats, unorthodox payment methods (gift cards, wire transfers, cryptocurrency), unfamiliar sender addresses or offers that seem "too good to be true".
Immediately stop communication, preserve all evidence (emails, texts, logs), report it to Listerhill, the FTC (ReportFraud.ftc.gov), IC3 for internet crimes or your local law enforcement.
Yes, but only if you protect your devices, always check for secure links, use strong passwords, and log out on shared/public devices.
Phishing emails mimic legitimate organizations to trick you into sharing sensitive information or downloading malware. Scammers often use urgency, threats, or fake links to do it.
Scammers may "accidentally" send you more money than asked, only to ask for the excess back. Once the original payment bounces, you're out the extra money.
If you receive an unsolicited donation request, look them up independently, avoid urgent donation pressure, and never send money via untraceable methods like cryptocurrency.
Scammers often use family emergencies or tech threats to press older adults into payment. Encourage your loved ones to verify with you or Listerhill before sharing personal information or funds.
Monitor financial statements and credit reports regularly. Set fraud alerts/freezes with credit bureaus if anything suspicious appears.
