Each year, fraudsters take advantage of the hustle and bustle by launching schemes designed to steal your money, your identity, or both.
Each year, fraudsters take advantage of the hustle and bustle by launching schemes designed to steal your money, your identity, or both. At Listerhill Credit Union, we want to help you shop smarter, give safer, and stay protected during this busy time. Whether you're a member or not, these holiday scam prevention tips can help you keep your hard-earned money where it belongs.
According to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), consumers reported over 2.6 million fraud cases in 2023, with losses totaling $10 billion - a record high. The holiday season is especially risky, with online shopping, travel bookings, and charitable donations creating more opportunities for scammers to strike.
Fraudsters prey on urgency, emotion, and seasonal generosity. But with a little know-how, you can avoid becoming a target.
Rather than list every scam out there, focus on these warning signs common to most seasonal fraud:
An ad promises a $20 Apple Watch or $5 designer handbag - usually on a website you've never heard of. These are often fake storefronts designed to steal your credit card number.
Stay safe: Only shop on reputable sites and double-check URLs for subtle misspellings. Look for "https" in the address bar and research unfamiliar companies through the Better Business Bureau or Trustpilot.
Scammers send emails or texts claiming to be from FedEx, UPS, or Amazon. They may say your package couldn't be delivered or needs more info - then ask you to click a link.
Stay safe: Go directly to the retailer or shipping provider's website to track orders. Never click links from unknown senders.
Fake charities pop up around the holidays, often using names that closely resemble real organizations.
Stay safe: Verify nonprofits on CharityNavigator.org or Give.org. Always initiate donations yourself - don't give via unsolicited emails or social media links.
Scammers may ask for payment in gift cards (often posing as a boss, grandchild, or tech support rep) or sell used/empty cards online.
Stay safe: Never use gift cards as payment. When buying gift cards, inspect the packaging and activation strip before purchase.
Seasonal job scams promise quick cash but may ask you to "verify" personal information or pay upfront for training or supplies.
Stay safe: Apply directly through a company's official website. Be wary of job offers received via social media or messaging apps.
Even the most careful shopper can slip up. If you think you've fallen for a scam:
